Guide to the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens
Visiting Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical gardens is one of the top things to do in Los Angeles with Kids. It is a 133 acres of land with more than 1000 animals. I personally love visiting Zoo asย It is a great way to spend some time off the busy cities and enjoy the pleasure of watching and being with the animals and with kids it is much more fun.
My Little one loves animals and he was really excited as it was his first time visiting a zoo.
Highlights of the Zoo :
There were many things to do and see at the zoo like, botanical garden with huge variety of plants , Bird show and many animlas like, the rare Mountain Tapir, Red Ape, zebras, Flamingos, meerkats, koalas, wallabies, snow leopards, Tigers, the golden lions, Alligators, the regal Tajik Markhor and Reggie but my favorite were,
Giraffe Feeding :
You can actually feed the giraffe here for 5$ which was the most exciting thing for my son to do at the zoo.The timings to feed the giraffe were 11 am to 1 pm and 2 pm to 4 pm.

LAIR (Living Amphibians, Invertebrates, and Reptiles):
A wonderful indoor collection of creatures likeย amphibians, invertebrates, and reptiles which can be seen at no other zoo in North America.
Hippo Encounter :
Hippo Encounter is a unique experience where visitors get a chance to meet hippos , touch and know about their lifestyle. It is offered only on weekends and holidays at noon.Make sure you plan in advance as tickets are very limited and go on sale two months in advance.
Elephants of the Asia:
I guess this is the largest exhibit at the zoo with four viewing area , China, India, Thailand and Cambodia reflecting their respective culture. It was very informative to know the role they play in every country. My favorite was the Indian side where you can see Elephant bathing under the water fall.
Gorillas :
Ok, I must say i was stunned to see how huge they are and how they act exactly like a human. We saw 5 gorillas in which 2 were in a one hand distance with a thick glass in between and I can say we spent huge amount of time watching Gorillas and Chimpanzees.
Chimpanzees of the Mahael Mountains:
There were more than 15 chimpanzees wandering all over the place, some were really close to us and some were chilling at the water fall.
More Activities for kids :
carousel :
There is a Huge Carousel with a variety of animals , which costs just 3$/ride.
Winninck Family Zoo :
A petting zoo where you can play with a variety of goats, and other small miniatures.
Play Park :
It is located all the way at the back of the zoo where kids can play in this animal themed playground and have a picnic.
Tips :
- Go as early as you can because most of the shows and encounters happen in the morning.
- Wear comfortable clothes and shoes as there is lot of walking and temperatures in LA may rise anytime.
- Single and double strollers are available near the entrance – the cost is $10 for the single and $14 for the double.
- If you have less time and want to cover everything, then i would suggest taking a Safari Shuttle, which stops at six different spots in the zoo and really saves a lot of time . Tickets are available inside the zoo, $4 for adults and $2 for Kids (2-12)
- There are live shows and informative lectures available throughout the day.Make sure you check their website for the shows on the day of your visit.
- It’s definitely not easy to cover the zoo in one visit. So have a note on what animals you would like to see and plan accordingly.
- The food inside the zoo is inexpensive but you can also bring your own picnic.
Timings :
10 am – 5 pm
Admission :
Adults – 21$ ; Kids (2-12) – 16$ ; Kids(under 2) – FREE
Parking :
Parking is FREE. They do offer preferred parking for $10 which is close to the park entrance.
Location :

I have been to zoo twice but too be honest I dont like going there. You may think I am weird but I dont like that they keep the animals captured. It hurts. I liked your giraffe photo by the way..

My family and I love to visits the Zoo wherever we go. We went to the San Diego Zoo but didn’t make it to the LA one when we were in Cali last time. And yes, Gorillas are HUGE!
